Where stress lives in the body, and how to release it

Stress doesn’t just exist in the mind. It lives in the body.
Many people hold stress in very similar places; the jaw, the shoulders, the chest, the lower back, the hips. These areas tighten unconsciously as part of the body’s natural stress response.
Over time, this holding can become habitual. We brace without realising it. Muscles stay engaged long after the original stress has passed. The body forgets how to fully let go.
This is why stress-related tension doesn’t always respond to stretching or rest alone.
Hands-on therapies like massage and reflexology work by helping the body feel safe enough to release. Massage supports the physical letting go of tension, while reflexology communicates with the nervous system, encouraging balance and calm.
When the body begins to soften, breathing deepens. The mind often follows. This is why people frequently describe feeling calmer, quieter, or more grounded after a session, not just looser.
Releasing stress from the body isn’t about forcing relaxation. It’s about creating the conditions where release can happen naturally.
