What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves the application of appropriate pressure to the feet, or face or hands, to help provide balance, reduce stress and boost self-healing within the body.

Reflexology is an ancient holistic practice, dating back thousands of years. Modern reflexology was pioneered by Dr William Fitzgerald in the early 1900’s with the development of Zone Therapy, showing the connection between the feet and various areas of the body. In the 1930’s it was further developed by American Physiotherapist Eunice Ingram, who pioneered the techniques of variable and alternating pressure depending on the client’s needs and developed the zones and maps of the feet.

How does it work?

The gentle power of reflexology works by stimulating specific reflex points on your feet. A reflex point is a specific are on the foot which corresponds to another part of the body. Check out this Interactive Foot Map which shows where the different reflexes on the feet are on the body.

By applying pressure to these reflex points, the nerve endings are activated (there are over 7,000 nerve endings on each foot!) and send signals to the brain. The brain responds to the messages or signals resulting in the relaxation of the muscles, tissues, and nerves. The aim of this is to promote natural healing.

What happens when I go for reflexology?

After you enter my treatment room and take a seat we will have a short 10-15 minute chat about why you’ve come for reflexology and how you hope it can help. We will complete a consultation which will go into more detail on your general health and lifestyle. I take a holistic approach to reflexology, as I believe its important to consider all aspects of your life when looking at specific issues that you’re living with.

Once our consultation is complete, you’ll take off your shoes and socks and get comfortable on the treatment couch. I have pillows and blankets to make you as comfortable and cosy as possible. Then it’s time to relax. I will cleanse your feet with hot towels before applying a beautiful balm to your feet.

Can reflexology help me?

As a reflexologist I do not claim to cure or diagnose. Reflexology works well alongside your standard healthcare to promote better health.  Each reflexology treatment is tailored specifically to your needs, taking into account any factors that are currently affecting your well-being. Like anything in life, some people will find it works for them and others will not. That’s OK! My advice is to give reflexology a go and see what happens. A helpful outcome may be possible for you.

Also if you're not sure and don't want to commit to a full hour session, I have 30 minute mini sessions available which will give you an introduction to reflexology.

Choosing a reflexologist

It’s best to choose a reflexologist that holds a professional qualification, is insured and is a member of a professional organisation. The Association of Reflexologists provides a directory of reflexologists so you can search for reflexologists in your area.

I have a Level 5 diploma in practitioner reflexology, the highest level of training currently available. I am also fully insured and a member of the Association of Reflexologists and the Federation of Holistic Therapists.
